The Basics of Hiring a Contractor!
Feb 16, 2004
Sometimes, with home repairs, it is best to hire a pro. When doing this, there are several ways of checking their credentials:
* Consult the local Chamber, the Better Business Bureau or a local consumer protection agency.
* Get references from the contractor and talk to these people.
* See about taking a tour of a home that the contractor has done work on.
* Check to see that he/she has a legitimate place of business.
* Talk to building product suppliers and any wholesale suppliers in the area to see if the contractor is known with them.
* Ask friends and relatives for referals of contractors they may know.
Compare pricing and bids from two or three firms. When comparing, make sure they are all quoting on the same specifications and materials.
Make sure you understand the contract which you may be signing to get the work done. It should be spelled out as to:
1. How much the entire job will cost.
2. How much interest you will pay (if the contractor sets up a loan for you to have the work done).
3. How much will service charges cost you.
4. How many payments you must make to pay this loan off.
Usually at completion of the project, you are required to sign a completion paper. Make sure the work is complete and to your satisfaction. |
